Alef is a free app created in 2013 to teach young children the alphabet and simple word construction. It was requested by a client from the United Arab Emirates and is available in five languages, including Arabic.
The application promotes learning through interactive activities designed for young children. They learn letter identification through the assembly of colourful puzzle pieces. Parents can challenge their children to build words with the puzzle pieces in English, German, French, Arabic or Spanish!
The program has categories of words, including animals, that give children visual clues to help them write. Parents have the ability to customize words, allowing for a wide range of possibilities such as names, places, and household items. Upon successful completion of a word, a jingle celebrates the child's achievement.
Managing languages such as English, German, and Italian is relatively straightforward. However, Arabic presents a more significant challenge due to its right-to-left reading orientation. In addition to this, the team had to learn its mechanics. Arabic letters are presented in isolated form and change depending on their position in the word, with some exceptions. Nevertheless, we are proud to have successfully created a fully dynamic engine for this complex language.
